Red Amaranth Seeds

Magnificent annual plant of an intense burgundy color, with heavy upright panicles. A variety that is both ornamental and condiment. Its leaves are eaten like spinach and its black seeds are also edible.

Growing Tips for Red Amaranth

Sowing

For earlier flowering, sow in a warm place (at a constant temperature of at least 20°) from March . Transplant a first time at 4 leaves in a pot, always in a warm place (15-20°). Plant 50 x 30 cm apart, after the last frosts, in open ground. Maintain a warm, humid (water lightly but regularly) and bright environment.

Choose a location in full sun with well-drained soil . Red amaranth can tolerate all types of soil , but fertile, well-amended soil will promote its growth.

It is also possible to sow directly in open ground in well-warmed soil in May, early June. Cover lightly with fine soil or simply press them gently into the soil without covering them. Thin out to at least 30 cm depending on the desired effect.

Maintenance and illness

Overall, red amaranth is a fairly easy plant to grow and can be a beautiful addition to your garden with its decorative flower spikes and culinary uses.

It particularly appreciates sunny areas and can tolerate periods of moderate drought. Regular watering will help maintain healthy growth and good seed production.

You can apply mulch around the plants to help keep the soil cool and reduce weeds.

The harvest

The leaves can be harvested before flowering, when the plant is young. The leaves are tender , prepared in the same way as spinach.

The flower stalks of red amaranth will be ready for harvest when the flowers are fully formed and display their carmine red color.

To harvest seeds , cut the flower stalks off the main stem. Allow them to dry completely on the stem. Once dry, shake them to release the seeds. Store the seeds in a cool, dry place until ready to use.

The benefits

Its leaves are eaten like spinach, rich in protein, vitamins A, B and C as well as calcium and magnesium.

Amaranth seeds are also used and have various applications. They are rich in protein, fiber and nutrients such as iron, calcium and magnesium.

They can be eaten as whole seeds, ground into flour, or used in dishes such as soups, salads, desserts, or energy bars. Amaranth seeds are valued for their slightly crunchy texture and nutty flavor
