Nodding catchfly (Silene nuttallii) is a species of flowering plant in the pink family (Caryophyllaceae). It is also known as Nuttall's catchfly or nodding silene. This perennial herb is native to the western United States and Canada. The plant produces small, pink or white flowers that nod downward, giving it its common name. Nodding catchfly grows in dry to moist meadows, open woods, and rocky areas. It is often found in association with other wildflowers, such as lupine and yarrow. The plant is not considered to be of significant economic or medicinal value.
Nodding catchfly (Silene pendula) is an unusual catchfly variety, made for growing in pots, bowls and boxes. This lowgrowing (20-25 cm high) plant with thin, slender stems trailing sideways, strikes with tender build and uncomparable lightness. Starting end of June and the whole July long they sprout dark pink, conical blooms with broadly extending petals with two characteristic divided lobes at the tips. The plant does not require a very fertile soil, any kind of light garden soil and plenty of sun will suit the nodding catchfly well. It develops best at the flower bed edgings and at borders with background of higher growing, contrasting summer flowers. Drooping catchfly, as it is also called, will also adorn containers, especially taller boxes or hanging baskets that it can share with lobelias. Seeds of the nodding catchfly should be sown directly into containers, borders in April, or under covers for earlier blooming. After the seedlings have been thinned they should grow in 15-20 cm spacings. Thanks to this we will be able to create a nice, compact grouping. One packet contains 0.5 g nodding catchfly seeds. The sowby date and growing guide are printed at the back side of the package. Weight: 0.5 g Height: 20-25 cm Use: ornamental; in pots, bowls, boxes, at edgings, borders Flowering period: June - July
