Ornamental sunflower (Helianthus annuus) is the most impressive annual ornamental plant. The "Red Sun" variety grows 150-200 cm tall. It forms long, unbranched stems, on tops of which red-brown, 10-15 cm wide flowerheads with a dark eye appear on July. The flowers stay with us very long, until October.
This plant is used for covering walls, fences and less-aesthetic building walls. It harmonises splendidly with mallows, larkspurs, other annuals and many ornamental shrubs. It can also be grown for cut flower, that maintains its freshness in vases for a long time. Inflorescences, that wilter in autumn, and developing seeds constitute bird fodder. Sunflower blooms have also found its use in herbal medicine, as fever-reducing, digestion-improving medicine. In form of compresses they milden swells and bruises. Sunflower belongs to the most valuable melliferous plants, too.
Seeds of the "Red Sun" sunflower are sown from April to May directly to the soil on the site, where the plants should grow. You put 2 seeds per hole, 50 cm apart. You may also prepare seedlings under covers to sow seeds into pots in April. Seedlings are then transplanted to the soil in May in 50 x 50 cm spacings. You should choose a sunny, warm and wind-sheltered sites (for example, alongside high fences or building walls) with fertile, moist soil.
